Terrariums and lampshades — objects that bring glass into the round, where structure and light play equally important roles.
Glass in Three Dimensions
Moving beyond the flat plane of the panel, these pieces wrap glass around three-dimensional forms. Terrariums were a signature of the early work — hugely popular in the 1970s — and remain a personal favorite for the way they combine geometric structure with the organic life they’re meant to house.
Lampshades present a different challenge: the light source is internal, inverting the usual relationship between glass and illumination. The result is an object that reads differently on and off, an intimate glow at night and a patterned object by day.
